The Chocolate Girl is one of the most famous works by the Swiss artist Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702–
1789). The painting had a tremendous effect in its time – deemed “the most beautiful pastel ever seen”
by Liotard’s contemporary Rosalba Carriera – and remains influential today. When I was little, I really
liked to look at a copy of this painting that my great-grandmother had, painted by a German artist in the
19th century. In my doll, I tried to convey all the charm of this picture.
